Abraham Gobits was a diamond worker. In 1929 he joined the Vereenigd Amsterdamsch Schaak Genootschap (the Amsterdam chess association). He had a distinctive, somewhat eccentric personality. Sometimes he played only moderately well, but at other times he was brilliant. In 1938 he won the Van Dien Cup for the best game of the season.
