Louis Joel was registered in 1941 as a sales representative, but he was a civil servant of the local council Den Haag. About 1942 Louis was discharged because Jews were not allowed anymore to work at the local council. He then registered as a volunteer in the Jewish orphanage in the Pletterijstraat in Den Haag. When the orphans were deported, he chose to go with them. He was conscious of what was waiting him.
