Joseph Bloemendal is born on 9 May 1881 as the second youngest son of Mozes Levie Bloemendal and Saartje de Groot. Joseph starts his working career as a messenger boy. He then becomes a waiter and ends up being a debt collector. Joseph gets married in 1911. The couple has 5 children, of which three children die at a young age. Seven years later, the couple gets divorced.
During the war, Joseph Bloemendal lives alone in Amsterdam.
