In 1888, merchant Levij Franken married Aleida Israël (1863-1918), the 'natural, not acknowledged daughter' of Aaltje Israël. He was called 'Koopmenneke' in the village. During a fall on ice, he broke his leg and he was bedbound for a long time. Thanks to the mediation of doctor Scaf he was admitted to the Sint Antonius Hospital in Haaksbergen, where he died on 29 September 1942.
