Maurits Charles van Messel was the son of Samuel van Messel and Helene van Meekren. He was a mechanical engineer. He was married and lived with his wife at 18 Johan Willem Brouwersplein in Amsterdam.
Maurits van Messel was active in the Ordedienst (OD) division of the resistance. He performed espionage. His son, Hans Maurits van Messel, was a member of the resistance as well.
On 4 April 1943 Maurits van Messel died on the Haaren outside command of Vught concentration camp.
