Francis Barend (Frans) Swartberg's father was one of the directors of the trading company N.V. Joz. Swartberg Handelsmij. Frans was born in Rotterdam. Soon after, in 1923, his parents moved to Hilversum, where they lived at Dalweg 3. Frans had two older brothers, Jozef (Joop) and Arnold Louis (Nol). All three of them studied medicine in Amsterdam. Their parents survived the war by going into hiding. According to family stories, Frans and his brother Nol gave themselves up to the Germans to save another family. After the war, their parents named their house JoNolFra, in memory of their sons who had died.
