Adolf Mendels was a son of Jacob Levie Mendels and Cato Gomperts. He married Bertha Gottschalk in Nijmegen on 23 February 1909, a daughter of Benjamin Gottschalk and Johanna van de Wielen.
The couple had one son, Jacob Lion.
Adolf was born into a family of eight children, of whom he self, his brother Lion and his sister Charlotte have been killed during the Shoah.
