Joseph Kokernoot was a son of Mozes Kokernoot and Kaatje de Hoop. He married Saartje Wijnschenk in Amsterdam on 13 Februari 1918, a daughter of Aaron Wijnschenk and Leentje Korper. The couple had two children: Mozes and Lena. The latter has survived the Holocaust. Mozes married 11 February 1942 to Auguste Levy from Frankfurt am Main but he has been killed in Auschwitz on 30 September 1942, together with his wife.
Josesph's spouse Saartje Wijnschenk passed away on 11 Juli 1926 in Amsterdam and had been interred two days later, on 13th of July in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen. Joseph Kokernoot remarried 9 November 1927 in Amsterdam Rebecca Polak, a daughter of Barend Polak and Elisabeth Prijs. From that marriage no children were born.
Joseph Kokernoot has been deported on 24 July 1942 from transit camp Westerbork to Auschwitz. From a copy of the camp administration of Birkenau (list 643, page 21), posessed by the Jewish Council of Amsterdam and noted on his record, it has appeared that Joseph Kokernoot stayed at Block 12 in Birkenau and that he "deceased" in Birkenau on 19 August 1942. His wife Rebecca was killed in Auschwitz on 23 November 1942.
