Jakob van der Horst from Hoogeveen was a son of Philip van der Horst and Saartje Meiboom. He married Rosette Voorzanger on 24 December 1918 in Rotterdam, a daughter of Joseph Voorzanger and Heintje Springer. The couple had five children, among them a twin, of whom one girl, Hanna, died 26 December 1923, only 4 months old. His daughter Heintje, born in 1914 and married in 1938, presumably has survived the war. His daughters Saartje, Esther and Anna as also his wife Rosette and he self, were killed in the Shoah.
According the registration card of the Jewish Council of Jakob van der Horst, it appeared that he has reported himself as worker at Camp Westerbork early August 1942 without being summoned. Jakob has been employed then in the Jewish labor camp Linde, south of Zuidwolde but from where on 3 October 1942 all still present Jewish forced laborers has been sent back to Camp Westerbork. Acoording notes on his registration cards, Jakob was still in Camp Westerbork the first half of November 1942 and stayed in barack 84 and 58. Later, Jakob was sent to Camp Vught and has been employed as forced laborer at Camp Moerdijk. From there he was sent back to Camp Westerbork on 3 July 1943 and stayed in barack 67. After three days, on 6 July, Jakob was deported to Sobibor, where he has been killed immediately upon arrival there on 9 July 1943.
