Hartog de Vries was a son of the broker Mordechai de Vries and Naatje Davids. He married Sophia Adriana Juliette de Boer from Rotterdam on 5 December 1907 in Watergraafsmeer (Amsterdam), a daughter of the musician Henri de Boer and the actress Ester van Rijk. The couple had two children, namely Esther Hanna in 1909 an Martijn Henri in 1913. Their daughter left for Tel Aviv on 25 September 1936 but their son and his family have been killed in the Shoah.
Hartog de Vries moved to Antwerp in 1928 and resided at Keyserlei 53 and in Berchem at Cogels-Osylei nr. 82. His wife and his two children stayed that time in Amsterdam at Linneausparkweg 86. In 1932 the family resided again in Amsterdam at Oosteinde 10 and per 2 October 1937 Hartog and Sophia has been registered at the address Keizersgracht 503, but they moved still one time in 1941 to nr. 523.
In September 1943 Hartog and Sophia have been registered in Camp Westerbork. Hartog stayed in barack 81 and Sophia in barack 67. Later she stayed in barack 81 too. On 8 February 1944 both were deported to Auschwitz and they have been killed immediately upon arrival there on 11 Februari 1944
