Betje Leek was a daughter of Benjamin Leek and Ettie Isak Nort. At age 47, she married the 52-year old widower of Hanna van der Kaars, the butcher Jacob Hertz from Elburg, a son of Hartog Levie Hertz and Leentje Cohen. Jacob's wife Hanna van der Kaars passed away 25 February 1925 in Amsterdam and was interred in the Jewisch Cemetery in Diemen. A few years later, also Jacob Hertz died on 11 January 1928 and he too was interred in the Jewisch Cemetery in Diem.
After the passing of her husband, Betje Leek, living at Van Woustraat in Amsterdm, rented rooms. Her brother Izak lived in with her at the same address. He was killed in Auschwitz 5 February 1943. Also Betje did not survive the Shoah; 20 March 1943 she was registered in Camp Westerbork and stayed for a short time in barack 69. 23 March she was deported to Sobibor and upon arrival there 26 March 1943 immediately killed.
