The 4th of October 1858 Leire Cohen was born in Delfzijl as son of the butcher Comprecht Cohen and Saartje (Sara) Blok. In his further life he usually was called Levie. Levie Cohen was a teacher. 16 August 1884 he married in Beerta Frouwke de Jonge, 23 years old, a daughter of Sekkel Noachs de Jonge, also butcher by trade and Lena Gosschalk. The couple had three children; two of them died as a baby, just a few months old. The eldest child, Comprecht, was killed in the Shoah.
Levie was born into a family of five children in total, namely he himself in 1858, Frouke in 1861, Rachel in 1864 – she died just 2 days old, Salomon in 1865, again a Rachel in 1868. Frouke was unmarried and she was killed in Sobibor. Salomon passed away in Groningen in 1926 and of Rachel is nothing further known.
Levie and his family lived at Marktstraat 45 in Delfzijl. After the passing of his wife Frouwke de Jonge 16 October 1926 at Delfzijl, Levie moved to Groningen city and he lived at Emmasingel 74. During the years of prosecution of jews, he died 17 March 1943, 84 years of age.
