David Lievendag from Borne was a son of Salomon Lievendag and Rozetta Sleisner. Presumably ±1905, he married Karoline Rothschild in her place of birth, Gronau. Ather their marriage, the couple lived in Enschede, where their three children were born, namely Jennie Jeannette in 1907, Salomon Siegfried in 1909 and Bertha in 1911. Both the daughters have survived the war, but Salomon Siegfried, who was married to his cousin Rosetha Lievendag (a daughter of Willem Lievendag and Mientjen van Gelder), was killed in Birkenau together with his wife. Also David Lievendag and Karoline Rothschild were killed in Auschwitz.
David Lievendag was born in 1873 into a family with in total eight children. His siblings were Dina (1865), Meier (1867), Joseph (1869), Rachel (1871), Vrouwtje (1875), Eva (1877), en Willem (1879). Dina, Meier, Rachel and Willem have passed away already before the war, but Joseph, Vrouwtje, Eva and David self, were killed in the Shoah.
It is not known when David Lievendag with wife and children arrived from Enschede in Rotterdam. At the time of the obligatory registration of all Jews in the Netherlands, the Lievendag family of five persons were registered in Rotterdam at the address Frank van Borselenstraat 18a, which was their residence, certainly up from October 1941 till their deportations in 1942.
The nazi’s started the deportations in Rotterdam 30 July 1942. A few days earlier, 2000 Jews received therefore a call to report for “provision of additional work in Germany under police supervision”. Packed and loaded, 1120 people have reported at “Loods 24”, among them also Salomon Siegfried Lievendag and his wife Rosetha Lievendag. They received a call, reported themselves and were transferred to- and registered in Westerbork 31 July 1942. With another 1011 deportees they were put on transport 3 August to Auschwitz. On arrival there, they were left alive until they were killed 1 September 1942 in Birkenau.
Despite the calls ±28 July 1942, many stayed at home of went into hiding. Also David’s daughters Jennie Jeannette and Bertha. It is certain that they were not put on any transport but from notes on both their registration cards of the Jewish Councilk, it appeared that they have emerged in Belgium 11 June 1945. They survived the Shoah.
David Lievendag and his wife Karoline Rothschild were locked in in Westerbork 22 October 1942 and the next day, 23 October deported to Auschwitz. On arrival there 26 October 1942 they were immediately killed.
