Market card

From 1922 all market vendors in Amsterdam with a permanent stand and all peddlers with a fixed spot along a public thoroughfare were required to obtain a market permit and pay market dues. Merchants carried the master card on their person, and a duplicate was stored by the Amsterdam market board.
The front of the card listed the merchant‘s first and last names, date of birth, address and the name of the merchant‘s spouse. Other data included the market where the holder had a stand, the day or days of the week that he or she sold on the market, the dates of registration and issue of the permanent stand and the merchandise. Many cards bore photographs as well.
These duplicate cards have been kept and are now at the Amsterdam Municipal Archive. Dave Verdooner made an index on the permits.
