Biography

About Salomon de Leeuw and his family.

Salomon de Leeuw, born 1 September 1890 in Amsterdam, was the eldest son of Abraham de Leeuw and Betje Zeehandelaar. He was a butcher and wholesaler of meat by profession. On 16 May 1922 he married in Amsterdam Rosette van Herpen, a daughter of Mozes van Herpen and Sara Dingsdag. The couple lived at Molenbeekstraat 2 1st floor in Amsterdam, where also their two children were born, Abraham in 1923 and Moritz in 1924.

The youngest son of Salomon and Rosette, Moritz de Leeuw was an apprentice slaughterer. He reported for the so-called work expansion in Germany and arrived in Westerbork on 29 July 1942. Moritz was put on transport on 24 July to Auschwitz, where he was employed as a forced labourer after arrival on 27 July 1942. It is not known exactly when and how Moritz has lost his life there. It was therefore that after the war, on orders of the Ministry of Justice the City of Amsterdam has drawn up a certificate of death for Moritz de Leeuw, in which his date of death was established as on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.

Salomon de Leeuw, his wife Rosette van Herpen and their eldest son living at home Abraham were arrested during the big raids in Amsterdam, the Germans carried out early October 1942. They were all carried off to Westerbork where they arrived between 3 and 5 October. On 9 October Salomon and Rosette were deported to Auschwitz and on arrival there on 12 October 1942 they were immediately killed.

Their son Abraham de Leeuw however, was put on transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz ten days later. This transport of 19 October arrived in Auschwitz 22 October 1942 where he was selected for hard labor in or outside the camp. Abraham de Leeuw eventually lost his life in Auschwitz on 28 February 1943.
