Izaak Van der Berg, his wife Anna née Schulenklopper and their son Herman, aged 16, tried in August 1942 to flee to Switzerland through occupied France. They were arrested near the Swiss border, before reaching Swiss soil or after having been turned back (we have no evidence of this), probably sent to jail in Besançon, and transferred to camp Pithiviers, from where they were sent to Drancy, and deported to Auschwitz on September 18, 1942 (convoy 34).
Anna Van der Berg's name is incorrectly spelt «Mandenberg, Aura» on convoy list Nr 34, and crossed out, a frequent feature of this peculiar list. But there is no doubt that she was deported to Auschwitz on that date.
