Biography

About Rebekka Oppenheijm-de Vries.

Rebekka de Vries was a daughter of Lipman de Vries and Mietje van Straten and born on 27 April 1858 in Harlingen. She married on 25 June 1884 in Amsterdam Jacob Oppenheijm, a natural son of Catharina Oppenheijm. The couple had three children, namely Mietje in 1886, Catharina in 1888 and in 1890 Jacob.

Rebekka was widowed already at a very young age; her husband Jacob passed away already before the birth of their 3rd child, namely on 16 December 1889. Their son, who was born on 31 July 1890, was named after his late father: Jacob.

Rebekka lived with her children at Elandsgracht 106 in Amsterdam and runned a kosher eating house there about 1924. She was arrested on 26 August 1943 and carried off to Westerbork, where she was locked up for unknown reasons in the penal barrack 67. On 31 August, she was deported to Auschwitz, and on arrival there on 3 September 1943, at her age of 85, immediately killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
