Wolf Pekel, van beroep diamantslijper, is al over de zeventig wanneer hij besluit naar Frankrijk te vluchten om aan deportatie te ontkomen. Zijn zoon Daniel Nathan, diens vrouw Sarah Pekel-van Gelderen, en dochter Regina sluiten zich bij hem aan.

Zijn andere zoon Lucas Pekel, diens vrouw Elisabeth Pekel-Bed en Wolf’s dochter Frederica Pekel wonen in Brussel en worden worden aldaar gearresteerd.
