Joseph Hartogensis, born on 9 December 1863 as the second son of Jacobus Jeronimus Hartogensis and Sophie van Ham, left Tilburg for Amsterdam on 8 July 1881. His brother Isidore followed him, both still unmarried and they stayed among others at Jodenbreestraat 22 and at Binnen Amstel 147. They worked as servants.
