Dutch historian, Jan de Roos wrote a haunting story of an attempted rescue of 5 year old Liesbeth Prins during the Holocaust. It is the English version of a book originally written and published in Dutch. This new revised and extended edition was published on Nov 17th 2024 in Australia by the Sydney Jewish Museum.
The true nature of both the saviours and persecutors of Jews in wartime Holland is revealed in this poignant and timely book.
It details Liesje’s innocent and happy childhood as revealed in the descriptions from the diaries her mother painstakingly wrote detailing her development, which are now housed in the Children’s Memorial of the Sydney Jewish Museum.
The author reveals the bravery of Lyda Reijer from Haarlem, her older sister Rie from Tilburg and the Visser family from Bussum as they tried to save the young girl, at risk always to their own lifes. Stories of cruelty and of supreme sacrifice make up this book which has been carefully researched. Lyda & Liesje is published by the Sydney Jewish Museum.
