Lea Barmes was the first born child of Abraham Joseph Barmes and Jansje Levie Mossel. She was born in Amsterdam on 27 March 1866 and had another seven siblings, namely Sophia, Louis, Joseph, Margaretha, Elisabeth, Hermina and Jacob.
