Jacob Raphael is een zoon van Lion Groenstad (A'dam, 5 nov 1853 - A'dam, 6 jan 1940) en Mietje Swart (Leeuwarden, 26 augustus 1857 - A'dam, 18 oktober 1939). Hij trouwde 9 juli 1924 met Carolina Sophia Davids (20 jaar), dochter van Eliazar Davids en Jeannette Wiener.
