Ilse Rolef was a daughter of Theo Rolef and Irene Mayer. In the 1930's she fled to the Netherlands, together with her brother and sister. There she and her sister Edith lived at the Nederlands-Israëlitisch Meisjesweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for girls) in Amsterdam.
