SOBU

By:

Dutch abbreviation for Special Assignments Office; a branch of Philips’ electronics company in Eindhoven set up especially for Jewish employees.

In 1941 the Philips’ electronics company selected Jewish employees for a range of specialist tasks. Gaining a place here meant that for the time being, these employees and their families were exempt from deportation. Philips made several attempts to move this SOBU group to somewhere safe (Spain, Curaçao), but without success. In 1943 these employees ended up in the Philips Kommando in Vught concentration camp.

See the explanatory note under the heading: Philips Kommando.
