Max was the son of Tobias "Theodor" (1851-1921) and Johanna Tobias nee Levy (1851-1914) from Altenkirchen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Max had two siblings, sister Thekla and brother Max. All three children perished in the Shoah. Cornelie "Nellie" Tobias nee Salomon (1891-1942), along with husband Max, perished at Auschwitz.
