Klaus came to the Netherlands in December 1938 and went straight to the Quakerschool in Haarlem. He had already lived there between December 1936 and April 1938.
According to the Gedenkbuch his mother, Erna Schmitz, born in Leipzig on February 3rd, 1899, also emigrated to the Netherlands, but she was deported from Weimar to the Belzyce ghetto in May 1942, like his father, Gustav, born on March 29th, 1880 in Blesen.
