Comments by Esra's sister

Esra could not be at the Youth Aliya Home in Loosdrecht until 7. December 1942, because, according to the transport lists of the Yad Vashem archives he was deported to Auschwitz on 3. November 1942. Therefore he must have gone into hiding in Friesland earlier.

He is also commemorated on a memorial in Kibbutz Sheluhot in Israel, where his sister Miriam is a member.

Esra was born on 1. February 1925. He lived at Wullenweberstrasse 4-5 in Berlin, Tiergarten with his mother and father and f o u r siblings, namely Benjamin, Rafael, Miriam and Hanna. While Esra joined the Youth Aliya in Loosdrecht, the rest of the family did not move to Amsterdam. His father, Samuel Jurovics entered the USA, where his sister lived, on a tourist visum, He died of cancer in the US on 4. September 1942 (22 Elul). Esra's mother, Edith Jurovics, managed to escape to London, where she lived and worked as the secretary to Mrs. Dr.Westrup, 17, Sherriff Road London NW 6. Most of Samuel's letters to his wife were saved and donated to the Holocaust Museum in Washington and I have translated them into Hebrew.

The four siblings of Esra are the following:
Binjamin Zeev Jurovics (17. June 1920 – 17. September 2003) arrived in Palestine in 1939, lived in Haifa, worked as a civil engineer for Solel Boneh, had two daughters: Naomi Singer – Jurovics who lives in Haifa and Vered Binyamini – Jurovics who lives in California.

Rafael Jair Jurovics (28 January 1922), architect, lived in Tel Aviv and now in a retirement residence in Hod HaSharon. He has two sons, Yoram Yair and Gabriel Yair both living in Israel.

Miriam Berlowitz – Jurovics (29 September 1926), who is a member of Kibbutz Sheluhot in the Beth Shea'n Valley. She has four children: Hanna Amitai – Berlowitz, Shmuel Berlowitz, Oved Berlowitz and Deborah Kilav – Berlowitz, all living with their families in Israel.

Hanna Shifra Yaari – Jurovics – myself - (3 November 1932) living in Haifa. I have three children: Ada Rivkah Cohen – Yaari, Yitzhak Yaari and Avinoam Yaari (named after Esra Avinoam) all living in Israel.
