Izaäk van Dam was married to Eva Nathans. The couple had three sons, Martijn Bertus, Siemon Machiel and Bernard Max. They owned a textile goods shop at 42 Stationsweg in Zuidlaren. The two eldest sons, Martijn Bertus and Siemon Machiel, worked in the shop and peddled textiles to farmers. Betje Polak from Sleen worked in the shop as a saleswoman.
Izaäk van Dam was chairman of the shopkeepers' associations in Zuidlaren. The Van Dam family spent a brief period in hiding but returned home. Some time later Izaäk and his two eldest sons were arrested by the SD and sent to Westerbork via Groningen. Eva van Dam-Nathans and her ten-year old son Bernard Max were deported to Auschwitz from Zuidlaren via Westerbork. Bernard Max threw a postcard from the train. The postcard reached Zuidlaren.
