Markus Swart was the sixth of the nine children of the merchant Levie Swart and Frouwke Kropveld. His father died in Amsterdam on 17 January 1940. Markus Swart was born at 187 Valkenburgerstraat in Amsterdam.
Markus Swart was a merchant. He married Esther Sacksionie, daughter of the chair mender Leman Sacksionie and Rebecca van de Kar, on 6 July 1938. Esther Sacksionie was a rag picker. The couple had two children, a daughter Frouwke, born at 8 Eerste Conradstraat in Amsterdam, and a son Levie, born at 143 Vrolikstraat in Amsterdam. Markus had already been deported by the time Levie was born.
