Jozef Meijer was married to Regina Cohen. The couple lived at 13-westzijde Boterdiep in Bedum. In 1909 they had a daughter Lotte, who died in 1936.
Jozef Meijer traded sheep. He was a member of the local De Eendracht society.
At age 13, Regina went to Amsterdam to celebrate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina. She was kicked by a horse from the royal procession and sustained permanent injuries. In 1942 Jozef Meijer and Regina Cohen went into hiding. Their third address in hiding was with the bridge master of the drawbridge in Ellerhuizen in the hamlet of Willemstreek. In the summer of 1943 they were arrested here during a Nazi raid and deported to Auschwitz via Groningen and Westerbork.
