Iwan de Vries was an orphan. At the end of 1938 he came from Altharen to Groningen. He lived there with the De Groot family. He first was forced to move to Amsterdam and then was put for some time in the orphanage of Westerbork. Eventually he was deported via Theresienstadt to Auschwitz and murdered there.
On 4 May 2009 an article was published in the Dagblad van het Noorden entitled 'Wie weet wat er met het onderduikertje Ivan is gebeurd'. On 13 May as a reaction a follow-up article was published, entitled 'Iwan uit Hendrikszstraat overleed in Auschwitz'.
