In October 1942, an abandoned child was taken in by the crèche opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam. Nobody knew who he was. The little boy was named Remi van Duinwijck, after Remi in the book 'Alleen op de wereld' (‘Sans Famille’ or Nobody’s Boy). Duinwijck was the place where he had been found. The little boy stole the hearts of the crèche staff and of the German officers, who came to visit him regularly. All the attention the boy received made it impossible to send him into hiding, and he was taken away and killed. After the war, his true name was discovered: Koenraad Huib Gezang.
