Marianne Franken was a daughter of Abraham Franken and Zippora Henriëtte Koenigsberger. She painted in the tradition of the 'Amsterdamse Joffers'. She painted people in her surroundings, like Jewish merchants, and famous Jewish personalities.

Marianne Franken was an artist. She mainly produced portrait paintings, mostly of women. She immortalized numerous well-known people, such as the dancer Chaja Goldstein, the pianist Marjo Tal and the historian Caroline Eitje; but she also made a portrait of a market vendor selling her merchandise. She also depicted her teacher, Martin Monnickendam. In addition, she painted a great many children’s portraits and diverse Jewish themes. After the war Caroline Eitje wrote a biography of the artist Marianne Franken. This handwritten biography remains.
