Hijman Emden was a son of Joost Emden and Jansje Canes. This couple had eleven children of which Eva and Grietje have died in childhood and Rebecca has died in Antwerp before the war. She was buried at the Jewish Cemetery of Putte. Seven others did did not survive the Holocaust: Fijtje, Benjamin, Mietje, Abraham, Clara and Vogeltje. Hijman married in Amsterdam on 4 March 1903 to Keetje van Kolm and they had three children of which their son Joost did not survive the Holocaust.
