Jonas Stern, age 3, is mentioned in the book Joodse kinderen in het kamp Vught by Janneke de Moei. It is possible that Jonas was on the children’s transport that left Vught on 6 June 1943 but remained behind in Westerbork because he was ill when most of the children on that transport were deported from Westerbork to Sobibor. Philip Mechanicus noted in his diary shortly after that 50 children from Vught were lying in bed in the infirmaries with measles, scarlet fever and mumps.
