Andries Ensel was a son of Raphael Andries Ensel and Betsy Polak.

Andries Ensel got married to Betje Waterman on 13 July 1882 in Gorinchem. The couple had 15 children: Raphael, Isaac, Samuel, Anna, Christiaan (died at a young age), Samuel (died at a young age), Simon (died at a young age), Marie (died at a young age), Levie, Anna (died at a young age), Mietje (died at a young age), Sientje and two children who survived the war.
Andries got remarried to Grietje Sluijzer in 1917 after the death of Betje in 1915.
