Alfred and Semi Hofmann were sons of Herbert Hofmann and Thekla Salomon. Their father died before the war. Their mother, two brothers and a sister were transported from Frankfurt am Main to the ghetto of Minsk on 11 November 1941.

On 4 May 1932 the 'Ezer Jatom' association opened a Jewish orphanage at 66 Pletterijstraat in The Hague. On 6 March 1943 the Nazis removed the children and the staff from the orphanage. They included several German refugee children, such as Alfred Hofmann.
