Joseph Stokvis was a son of Isaac Stokvis and Rebecca Moscoviter. He married in Amsterdam on 3 September 1890 to Rebecca Barend, daughter of Abraham Barend and Marianne Mouw. The couple had seven children together of whom one babydaughter passed away, only five months old and one son survived the Holocaust. The other children were Isaac, Marianne, Esther, Eva en Catharina
