About Penina van Zuiden-Duque

Widowed from Abraham van Zuiden on 25 September 1940.

Penina Duque, born on 27 May 1896 in Amsterdam as the youngest of Jacob Duque and Rebekka Dwinger, was married on 24 November 1920 to Abraham van Zuiden, a son of Herman van Zuiden and Roosje Engers. He was born on 6 July 1881 in Assen. The couple lived at Geleenstraat 51-I in Amsterdam, but the marriage remained childless. Abraham van Zuiden died on 25 September 1940 in Amsterdam.

Penina van Zuiden-Duque was deported from the Hollandse Schouwburg in Amsterdam to Westerbork on 7 August 1942. She was completely alone, which may have been the reason that her brother Samuel accompanied her to Westerbork that same day "Ohne Aufruf" with the same transport.

Penina and her brother Samuel were both deported to Auschwitz on 8 August 1942, where upon arrival they undoubtedly found appalling conditions and suffered the hardships there. It is not known whether they were employed there or not, when they died there or were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

That is why the Dutch Authorities determined after the war, partly based on research by the Red Cross, that Penina van Zuiden-Duque and her brother Samuel Duque could no longer be alive after 30 September 1942. The municipality of Amsterdam then drew up death certificates for them, recording that Penina van Zuiden-Duque and Samuel Duque died in Auschwitz on 30 September 1942.
