Jakob van Dam was the son of Berend van Dam and Vrouwke Meijer. He was married to Rosa Benima, daughter of Mozes Levie Benima and Friederike Levie. Since 1913 Jakob van Dam was a cantor and teacher at the Jewish community in Amersfoort. He was also the secretary to the congregation council and was a member of the Amersfoort sub-committee for Jewish refugees.
