Mechiel Gobes was a son of Joseph Gobes and Fijtje Vreeland.

Mechiel Gobes was born in a socialist, non-religious family in Amsterdam-North. Mechiel was an electrician. He married in 1927 at the age of 25. The couple got one child. His wife as well as his child has survived the war.
From the beginning of the war Mechiel was a member of the communist resistance. He refused to wear the Jewish Star because of his political convictions. In 1941 he was arrested because he walked on the street without the Jewish Star, not because of his resistance activities. After his arrest Mechiel was brought to a remand prison at the Amstelveenseweg. From there he was deported to Mauthausen.
When Mechiel Gobes was arrested, he lived at the Edammerstraat 24 hs in Amsterdam North.
