Mozes Alexander van der Staal was a son of Wessel van der Staal and Leentje van der Staal who lived in Rotterdam. Mozes van der Staal moved to Gorinchem on 18 November 1940. Initially he earned his living as a messenger boy, but soon became a fruit merchant.
