Jakob van Hasselt was a son of Filippus Heimans van Hasselt and Saartje Colthof.

Jakob van Hasselt was married to a non-Jewish woman. His wife and two children survived the war. The children survived the camps in the Dutch Indies. In 1933 he published a pamphlet against Hitler.
