Search
This basic search is possible based on name, location (address), place, year, or date of death, or texts of additions.
- Go to Menu & search
- Now type in your search term in the window below SEARCH, for example a name or address. Do not click <enter>. Several suggestions will appear directly. You can click on these. You will then be redirected to the relevant page with information.
- When these first results do not include what you were looking for, you can press <enter>. You will now be shown all search results. These are also clickable.
- All information on the Jewish Monument is searched in this manner. This does not only include the person pages, but also all additions and stories. In the text accompanying the search results the type of information is indicated. For example, whether it concerns the page of a Jewish victim, a biography, or an addition.
An example: we are looking for Esther Boas. The first search result offers a list with Jewish war victims and their dates of birth and death.
This list includes the Esther Boas (1896-1943) we were looking for. When we click on the name Esther Boas, we go directly to her page.
You can also click <enter> or click on the magnifying glass in the red square to see the complete list of all search results. All these results come with an indication as to what kind of information they concern. In the example of Esther Boas, the first text to appear at the top is the text “Over Esther Boas” (About Esther Boas), including the information that this concerns a biography.
Sometimes a search yields a lot of results. In that case you can refine your search results. On the left of the screen, you will see several categories based on which you can filter these. For example, on the category Victims (1940-1945), or on Locations. By clicking a category, you will select a filter to refine your search with. You can select several filters at once. At the top of the list of search results you can see in which categories you are now searching. If you want other categories, you can undo the previously chosen categories by clicking the ‘x’-symbol
You cannot find what you are looking for
All people have been incorporated in the monument with their official names. These can differ from the names used by family and friends, for example “Nannie” for “Nanette” and “Abby” for “Abraham.” Therefore, always use their official name when searching for someone.
A name can also be spelled in different ways. For example, ij is often written as y (Meijer and Meyer) and the s and z are sometimes interchangeable (Josef and Jozef), and the letter f was often written as ph back in the day (Efraïm and Ephraïm). Using or not using accent-marks or a diaresis can also make a difference (Israels or Israëls). Therefore, try different spellings if you do not immediately find what you are looking for.
The search function operates on complete, entire words, for example a correct official first name or surname. When you make a typing error or when you only know the beginning of a name, it is possible that not all results are shown.
When you are looking for a specific person, it is better to use the advanced search option. This option can be found at the top right-hand side of the menu, above the red square with the magnifying glass.
Advanced search
For this the person pages of the Jewish Monument are searched.
To search in advanced mode, you can do the following: from the homepage go to Menu & Search
- Do not fill in anything in the search box behind the word Search. Click directly on the words Advanced search above the magnifying glass.
- You will now see a form with the text ‘Search person’ and a couple of search boxes below that.
- You do not need to fill in all search boxes. If you do not have certain information, you can leave the box in question empty.
- If you know someone’s date of birth, it is advisable to fill this in. This generally yields the best result. Please note: the date of birth must be entered in a strict format, first the year, then the month, and then the day.
- You can also search based on only a date of birth or date of death, or an address. This way you can, for instance, use the advanced search mode to find out which victims lived at a certain address. In that case you only enter place of residence and street name.
- When you have entered all information, you click on the red ‘Search’-button. This is all the way at the bottom, at the bottom right-hand side.
Explanation of search results
In addition to all victims of the Shoah in the Netherlands, the Jewish Monument also includes the person pages of pre- and post-war family members, surviving family members and the profile pages of current users of the Jewish Monument. In addition to name, dates of birth and death, person pages can also include more information, such as an address, potential family members, and stories.
The colour of a page will tell whether it concerns a victim, a survivor, a user, or a remaining family member. Victim pages are dark purple, such as Esther Boas’ page. Pages belonging to survivors and remaining family members are grey, and the profile pages of users are white.
