Elkan Barentz, warehouse clerk and born in Amsteradm 11 February 1886, was a son of Jacob Barentz and Eva Juliard. He married 12 September 1917 in Amsterdam Jetje van Thijn, who was born 7 September 1886 in Amsterdam as daughter of Nathan van Thijn and Eva van der Wouden. The couple had one son, Jacques, who was born 14 June 1918.
After their wedding, Elkan and Jetje lived at Ferdinand Bolstraat 130 in Amsterdam, where in 1918 their son Jacques was born. On 23 March 1925 the family moved to Boerhaveplein 12 1st floor and 19 October 1931 they moved to Mesdaglaan 30 in Heemstede. From there, they went to Oude Amersfoortseweg 13 in Hilversum at some point, where they have lived till 1941/1942. Their last address became Rijnstraat 185 in Amsterdam, from where they all were taken to Westerbork.
In Westerbork the family was registered 8 November 1942 and already deported to Auschwitz 10 November. This transport of in total 758 deportees, stopped in Kozel, which is located about 80 km west from Auschwitz were 180 men between 15 and 50 years of age were forced to leave the train. They were employed as forced laborers in the surrounding satellite camps of Auschwitz. Jacques Barentz belonged to that group too.
Those, who remained in the train, were transported further to Auschwitz and on arrival there on 13 November 1942, Elkan Barentz and his wife Jetje van Thijn were immediately killed.
