About Klaartje Godschalk

Klaartje Godschalk was  a daughter of David Godschalk, who was born 4 March 1836 in Norg and his 2nd wife Eva van der Hal, born in 1848 in Warffum. Her father David was previously married to Henderika Lezer, who was born in 1837 but had passed away on 5 February 1883.

From that wedding, Klaartje had five half-siblings, of whom one has died at the age of 3 years. Her sister Leentje Godschalk died at the age of 80 years on 28 October 1944 in Diemen. (Her daughter Amalia Hendrika Cornelia van der Wijk, who as the only of Leentje's three children survived the Holocaust, has registered her death at the Municipality of Diemen after the war. There, on 10 June 1945 a certificate of death was made out with the number 32 on folio 9 of the register of deaths of 1945)

From the 2nd marriage of her father she had another brother, Hartog, who was born in 1890 and who was killed in the Shoah too with his wife and son.

Klaartje was born in Uithuizen on 27 June 1887 and unmarried and worked as domestic aid. By virtue of her profession as house keeper, she changed of addresses many times. As domestic aid Klaartje worked among others in Groningen, Den Haag, Rijswijk, Veghel and Rotterdam - where she also worked as a cook, but her latest known address was Nieuwe Haven 35 in Den Haag.

On 5 January 1943 she was registered in Westerbork and deported to Auschwitz on 18 January. On arrival there on 21 January 1943, Klaartje Godschalk was immediately killed.
