Edith and Mirjam came to the Netherlands on January 12th, 1939. They stayed in a refugee facility in Wijk aan Zee, then in the Burgerweeshuis. They got diphtheria in the summer of 1939 and were in the hospital for a while. Only in November 1939 did they move in with their parents, who were then living in Amsterdam, at the Plantage Doklaan. In January 1940 they moved to Haarlem.
When the girls arrived in the Netherlands their father was still in Duisburg, their mother in the hospital in Amsterdam.
