Maurits was arrested in November 1943 and deported from Mechelen on 15 January 1944.
Maurits passed selection at Auschwitz and was given prisoner number 172374. He was assigned to work in Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also known as "Buna," the camp devoted to IG Farbens synthetic rubber production.
Maurits fell ill several times in Buna, but survived the war. It isn't clear where he was liberated, but he did survive and immigrated to the United States with his wife, who also survived the war. He died in Los Angeles in 1986.
