Adolf Stern was born in Bergen-Enkheim, Germany on August 17th, 1870. [1]He married Paula Stark (born in Bergen-Enkheim September 6th, 1876). They had two children, Heinrich and Kurt (nee Max). [1,2]He ran a thriving kosher butcher business, mainly serving Jewish families in Frankfurt. [1,2]After Paula's death in 1936, he joined his son Heinrich, Heinrich's wife Helene (Henny) and their son Ernst in Amsterdam, where they had moved. In January 1938, shortly after the birth of Adolf's second grandson, Justin, the family moved to Michelangelostraat 54. His third grandson, Denny, was born while the family lived there. Adolf loved to watch his grandsons play on the beach on family trips to Zandvoort, to walk Ernst to and from school, and to take the children on neighborhood walks. [2]In January, 1943, Adolf was lying sick in bed when Nazi soldiers arrived and removed him from the apartment in front of his grandsons. [2]Heinrich, Henny, and their three children were arrested from Michelangelostraat 54 on September 29th, 1943. [2] The family survived internment at Westerbork, Bergen-Belsen, and Bieberach an der Riss. They were liberated on May 8, 1945, and went to a DP camp, Jordanbad, then back to Amsterdam January 1, 1946. In 1949, they sailed on the SS Westerdam from Rotterdam to NYC, arriving in the US March 14th, 1949 where they joined Kurt and his family.
