Hendrik van Messel's declaration of intention to become a naturalized American citizen, dated December 1921. He listed his address as 545 West End Avenue, New York City. Van Messel returned to the Netherlands soon after his naturalization and married Hester Eijl in 1922. They traveled back to the US, where they had two children before divorcing in 1932.
